Kathrina "Katie" Lammle

March 10, 1932 — July 14, 2014

Kathrina "Katie" Lammle passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of July 14, 2014, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor after a brief illness. She was surrounded with the love from all of her children and siblings.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 17, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father J. Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant. Burial will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery south of Sturgis, SD.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with a Liturgical Wake Service and Catholic Daughter's Rosary being held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues for one hour prior to Mass at church on Thursday.

Katie was born on March 10, 1932 in Wishek, ND. She grew up on the family dairy farm near Mina, SD, and was the oldest of Katherine and Ludwig Mathern's three children. She attended school in Aberdeen and was a 1950 graduate of Central High School. In 1954 she was united in marriage with Melvin Lammle in Sacramento, CA. She worked in bookkeeping until the birth of their first child.

Katie and Melvin moved from California to Reno, NV, where Katie was a homemaker while raising their family. Katie and her family then moved to Aberdeen in 1967, where she worked with Melvin operating Lammle Realty. She went on to work for the Brown County auditor's office as well as the Nash Finch store (Econo Foods) before retiring.

The Catholic faith was central to Katie's daily life, where she was a devoted member of the St. Mary's church in Aberdeen. She served as Eucharistic minister, was involved with Catholic Daughters of America, a greeter, and a cemetery board member. She was also active in the Red Hatters, VFW auxiliary, and RSVP - Senior Meals and Storybook Land. Katie's German-from-Russia heritage figured prominently in the life she lived and the life of her children. She spoke German and her cheese buttons and dumpfnudela were second to none. She loved being a grandmother to all nine of her grandkids, planting spring flowers at the cabin in Lake Osakis, music (polka, polka, polka!), and chasing after her beloved dog, Scrabbles. She was a fierce card player and not to be trifled with when there was a cribbage board in the vicinity.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, and her parents, Katherine and Ludwig Mathern.

She is survived by her sister and brother: Juletta (Bud) Smith and Alvin (Mary) Mathern; her children: Linda LeVee, Kevin (Nancy) Lammle, Susan (Ron) Struck, Robert (Mary) Lammle, Gregory (Roxanne Newman) Lammle, Juliana (Jeffrey) Reuppel, and Steven Lammle; her grandchildren: Josh (Mary) LeVee, Ryan Lammle, Zack Lammle, Andrea Lammle, Tessie Lammle, Melissa Lammle, Matthew Reuppel, Samantha Reuppel, and Michael Reuppel; her niece and nephew, Cathy Smith-Dutenhoffer and Alvin Mathern, Jr. Finally, heaven had to wait for Katie until she joined the Great-Grandma club with the arrival of Zoey LeVee this past spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen, SD.
