Kathleen Carol DeYoung, 73, of Aberdeen, SD, was taken home by her heavenly father on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. She was residing at the Benedictine Living Community in Ellendale, ND.
Funeral Service will be 11:30 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel, Aberdeen, with Rev. Jordan Andreasen of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be 10:00-11:30 a.m., Thursday, at the mortuary. A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the service at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center. Burial will follow at 1:30, Thursday.

Kathy was born in Ipswich to Albert and Malinda (Zenker) Bender on February 2, 1949, and grew up on a farm near Leola, SD. She attended Howard Township Country School and graduated from Leola High School in 1967. Kathy graduated from Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in 1968.
Kathy married in 1969 and was blessed with two wonderful children: Rebecca and Brent. She was employed as a hairstylist for four years and then opened Kathy’s Kurl Korner in her home near Leola.
Kathy was an organist, Sunday School and confirmation class teacher, and LWML member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Leola. She was also a member of the Little Women’s Extension Club of Leola.
Kathy moved to Aberdeen with her children and worked as a manager at the Dakota Farmer Homestore.
On March 24, 1979, Kathy and William “Bill” DeYoung were united in marriage. Kathy and Bill were members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. In 1990, due to a muscle disability, Kathy no longer worked outside the home. They purchased a home at Mina where they lived until Kathy received nursing home care in 2022.
Kathy enjoyed spending time with her family, designing and decorating, exploring new places, and helping others.
Grateful for having shared Kathy’s life is her husband William “Bill” DeYoung of Aberdeen; daughter, Rebecca (Thomas) Haarstad of Vergas, MN; son, Brent Zantow of Fargo, ND; brother, Leon (Carolyn Hess) Bender of Aberdeen; nephew Michael (Rita) Bender of Rapid City; great-niece, Erin Bender of Spearfish; great-nephew, Andrew Bender of Rapid City; niece, Patricia Hazard of Roseville, MN; and aunt, Norma Schilling of Anaheim Hills, CA.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and niece baby Kayleen Bender.
