Katherine G. Kienow

October 23, 1923 — December 7, 2013

Katherine G. Kienow, 90, of Aberdeen, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Sanford Regional Hospital in Aberdeen.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church in Warner, SD, with Pastor Joanne Nagele officiating. Burial will take place at Warner Cemetery.

Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the mortuary, and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to either St. John Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice.

Katherine G. Nieuwsma was born on October 23, 1923, in Linton, ND, to Ed P. and Jane (Moerman) Nieuwsma. She was baptized at Christian Reformed Church in Hull, ND. Katherine attended rural school near her home and graduated from Hague High School in 1941. Following graduation, she moved to Aberdeen and worked at S & L Department Store until 1945.

Katherine was united in marriage to John H. Kienow on October 16, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church in Warner. She became a member of St. John and the couple lived on a farm west of Warner, before moving to Aberdeen in 1981. While living on the farm, she and John started Kienow Sales and Distributing. Katherine also kept busy being a mother, grandmother, homemaker, and helping with the farming and implement business. She and John shared over 51 years of marriage before he passed away on January 22, 1997.

Katherine was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Elizabeth Circle. She was also a member of the Warner Senior Citizens and Whist Club. Most of all, Katherine loved spending time with family and friends. She was proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed babysitting them, (as well as other kids), and watching her grandsons play basketball. Katherine also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.

Blessed to have shared Katherine's life is her daughter, Cheryl (Craig) Papke of Stratford, SD; her sons: Henry (Cathy) Kienow of Mina, SD, and Rick (Amanda) Kienow of Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren: Kim (Jamie) Pulfrey of Aberdeen, SD, Lew (Sara) Hoyt of Rapid City, SD, Chris (Kari) Papke of Sioux Falls, SD, Chad (Lisa) Papke of Humboldt, SD, Patrick (Shiloh) Ays of Jacksonville, NC, Ashley Ays of Watertown, SD, and Steven Ays of Aberdeen, SD; great grandchildren: Makayla Pulfrey, Joseph Pulfrey, Elijah Hoyt, Judah Hoyt, Gabrielle Hoyt, Patrick Ays, Jr. and Coy Papke; sister, Celia VanderVorste of Bismarck, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Katherine's parents; husband, John; brothers: Elmer, Peter, and Cornie; sisters: Annie VerMeer, Sadie Plantage, Ella Bennett, Genevieve Kienow, and Agnes Brenner; and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Kienow, preceded her in death.
