Kasper “Kap” Scherr was born on February 8, 1937, in Hague, ND to Leonard and Theresa (Reinbold) Scherr. He spent the first six years of his life living on the family farm in North Dakota before moving with his family to a farm west of Roscoe, SD, where he grew up and attended school.  Following graduation from high school, Kap and a friend travelled for several years.

In 1959, Kap was drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas for his country until the time of his honorable discharge in 1961. He then attended barber school and became a barber.

Kap was united in marriage to Jeanette Kiesz in Huron, SD.  The couple made Aberdeen their home and raised four children: Len, Bob, Vickie and Joel. Over the years, Kap’s employment included working as barber, an insurance agent, and most recently, working with his sons as a painter.

Kap was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for over 50 years. Some of his favorite activities included going dancing with his wife, playing cards with friends, and socializing with many people. After being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer in 2006, Kap became spiritually inspired. Throughout his 15-year survival, Kap endured over 200 rounds of chemotherapy that left him bed-ridden for the better part of three years. It was during that time that he was able to compose three prayers that put into words what he believed and how he lived. Kap considered himself blessed many, many, times over and shared those prayers with hundreds of people since then. Kap felt very close to God, and even referred to Jesus as “his big brother”.

Blessed to have shared in Kap’s life is his wife of 57 years, Jeanette Scherr of Aberdeen; his children:  Len (Emma) Scherr of Aberdeen, Bob Scherr of Eden Prairie, MN, Vickie (Patrick) Hyland of Plymouth, MN, and Joel Scherr of Breckenridge, MN; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Rosemary Kocher,

Sebastian (Marian) Scherr, Barbara Hoerner, Lorraine (Marvin) Uhrich, Violet (Gene) Horn; and many nieces and nephews.

Kap was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Leonard Scherr and Joseph Scherr; and his sister, Genevieve (Scherr) Craeger.
