July 9, 1967 – March 9, 2026
Joseph “Joe” Gisi, 58, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026, peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 2–5 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Yelduz Shriners, 802 S Main St, Aberdeen, SD 57401.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is honored to serve the Gisi family. Friends and family may sign the online guestbook at www.schriversmemorial.com.
Joseph Brian Gisi was born on July 9, 1967, in Aberdeen, SD, to Paul and Margaret (Oe) Gisi. He was raised in Aberdeen alongside his seven siblings and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1985.
After graduation, Joe worked locally for several years before enlisting in the United States Army in 1989. During his service, he was stationed in Hawaii and completed two overseas tours, one in Thailand and one in Japan, where he trained alongside troops from those countries and created many lasting memories. He was honorably discharged in 1991 and returned home to Aberdeen.
Throughout his career, Joe worked in sales, where his natural charisma and friendly personality allowed him to build countless lasting relationships. Over the years, he worked with A-1 Beverage, Johnson Brothers Famous Brands, Hub City Inc., 3M, and Corporate Image Group. Many of his clients became close friends over the years, a testament to Joe’s personable nature. Joe was also known to many in the community from his time working part-time at Sooper Stop alongside his brother and sister-in-law, where he enjoyed visiting with customers and friends.
While working at Hub City, Joe met the love of his life, Julie Janisch. The two quickly became inseparable and shared more than 21 wonderful years together before being united in marriage on August 22, 2025. Together, they made their lifelong home in Aberdeen and created many cherished memories with Julie’s children, Jacob and Jared Janisch.
Joe was a true social butterfly who loved being around people. He was a die-hard fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins, an avid golfer, and enjoyed spending time with friends at Schwan’s Recreation. He especially loved classic 1980s rock music and had a fun-loving spirit and zest for life that made every gathering brighter. During Joe’s battle with cancer, he and Julie were deeply supported by the many friends and loved ones who stopped by to visit, share stories, and spend time together. Those visits and support meant everything to them and reflected the many friendships Joe built throughout his life. Joe’s laughter, friendship, and enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Grateful for having shared Joe’s life are his wife, Julie Janisch of Aberdeen; stepson, Jacob (Brittney) Janisch, and their daughter Grace of Erie, Colorado; stepson, Jared Janisch, of Aberdeen, South Dakota; siblings, Laura (Lee) Frankenberger, Tom (Toni) Gisi, Dianna Gisi, Paul (Shawna) Gisi, and Lynette Gisi; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends; father in law and mother in law LeRoy and Marlene Nelson; and brothers-in-law Lee Nelson and Lynn Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Margaret Gisi; and siblings, Jim Gisi and Mary Lindquist.
