Joseph Edward Hauck was born on October 9, 1925, in Aberdeen, SD, to Adam and Anna (Bullock) Hauck. He grew up attending country school near Richmond, where the family farmed and ranched. Later, the Hauck family moved near Wetonka, SD, and then to Aberdeen.

After attending Aberdeen Central High School, Joseph enlisted in the Army and served for two years in France and Germany during World War II.

On June 20, 1951, Joseph was united in marriage to Jean Farley in Leola, SD. Three daughters were added to this union. The family spent a short time in Lead, SD, where Joe worked at the Homestake Gold Mine before returning to Aberdeen, where he worked much of his life with his father and brothers building houses and doing cement construction with Hauck Brother's Construction. Joseph and Jean shared 52 years together before she passed away.

Joe was a talented carpenter who created many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family and even built his own home. Engraving and metal work on guns was a hobby he was very proud of and his taxidermy training allowed him the opportunity to mount animals and birds for many hunters.

Joe relished his hunting trips with his brothers and nephews. Being noted for his sense of humor, he kept his family laughing with jokes and tall tales. He was a talented photographer who photographed the weddings of his daughters and many family members. As he grew older, Joe adorned his living room walls with countless pictures of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His home had an open door where family and friends were always welcome to gather, visit, eat, stay over, and celebrate together. Joe's faith was his guiding force in life and he was a quiet, gentle, man who loved and protected his family.

Grateful for having shared Joe's life are his three daughters: Sharon (Tom) Vanorny of Oakes, ND, Lora (Neil) Schaunaman of Westport, SD, and Christie (Jeff) Kiesz of Aberdeen; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Marcia) Hauck of Aberdeen; and one sister, Sister Jean Marie Hauck, SDS Huntsville, AL.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents, Adam and Anna; brothers: Jack, Sam, Nick, and Mike Hauck; sisters: Madeline Johnson, Mary Ann Peters and Clara Beilke; and one grandson, David Vanorny.
