Joseph “Joe” Remy Goetz, 91, of Aberdeen, SD, and formerly of Roscoe, SD, passed away July 13, 2026, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen due to complications from pneumonia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Father Greg Tschakert officiating.

A time for fellowship and luncheon will follow Mass at the parish hall.

Burial with Military Honors will be held at Morningside Cemetery in Roscoe, SD, following lunch.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel, with a 7:00 p.m. liturgical wake service. Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, Joe’s family graciously requests that memorials be sent to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Joe was born to Roy and Katherine (Deis) Goetz on August 7, 1934, at the family farm outside of Roscoe. He was the third child and one of five brothers, with one sister.

Joe attended Hillside Country School through eighth grade. He then served in the United States Army from January 1956 to December 1958, and later attended Hanson Auto School in Fargo, ND, to learn about welding and automotive repair before returning to farm in South Dakota. He married Anna (Geier) on November 11, 1958, in Bowdle, and they welcomed their first daughter, Mary, in 1959, with four more to follow: Jane and JoAnn in 1960, Francine in 1963, and Kristie in 1968.

Joe and Anna raised their daughters on the farm, instilling in them the values of hard work, faith, and family. In 1984, Joe lost Anna to breast cancer, but he found solace in having his youngest daughter, Kristie, still at home with him and, of course, his work on the farm.

Joe was a lifelong farmer who took great pride in tending to and cultivating the land to bring forth a good harvest as often as he could. His success in farming throughout his life can be attributed to his deep devotion to the land and an innate understanding of its possibilities. Even as his health declined in his later years, Joe could always be counted on to talk about what tasks he needed to take care of on the farm or ask when he would be able to get out to the farm next.

After his family and the farm, Joe loved dancing. He was an excellent dancer who loved to move to the beat of a good song and spent many nights at The Eagles in Aberdeen twirling ladies around the dance floor. In addition to his dancing skills, Joe was friendly and engaging with everyone he met, making him a pleasant conversationalist with anyone lucky enough to cross his path, even for a few minutes. Joe was a dedicated member of the American Legion and VFW for many years, as well as serving with the Roscoe Honor Guard.

Joe moved to Aberdeen in June 2014, where he lived independently until March 2021, when he moved to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen for additional care.

Grateful for having shared his life are his five daughters: Mary (Wally) Grismer of Bowdle, SD, Jane (Greg) Nehlich of Aberdeen, SD, JoAnn (Monte) Troske of Turton, SD, Francine (David) Delaney of Plymouth, MN, and Kristie Goetz of Sioux Falls; as well as 8 grandchildren: Jody (Tom) Pitt of Crystal, MN, JoBeth (Jerome Podvin) Grismer of Chaska, MN, Mitchell (Katie) Nehlich of Aberdeen, Kayla (Justin) Ohleen of Sioux Falls, Danielle (Kevin) Teigen of Turton, SD, Elizabeth (Brian) Massmann of Fertile, MN, Joseph (Shelby) Delaney of Minnetonka, MN; and Michael Delaney of Minneapolis, MN; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his younger brothers Jerome (Linda) Goetz and Jim (Angie) Goetz, and his sister Betty Ellwein.

Reunited with Joe in heaven are his wife, Anna; parents, Roy and Katherine; older brothers Leonard, Elmer (Aileen), younger brother Elroy (Jean), and brother-in-law Don Ellwein, as well as other extended family members.

Joe’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff members at Bethesda for their loving care over the past five years, and a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, who thoughtfully and tenderly walked alongside them as Joe made the journey to his eternal home.
