John "Jack" Cowles

John “Jack” Cowles, 85, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on August 6, 2024, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Jack's wishes were to have no formal services, and his family will respect his wishes.

John H. Cowles was born December 17, 1938, to Fred & Veronica ‘Fern’ (Schulte) Cowles. He was raised on the family homestead near Mellette, South Dakota, with his siblings: Elizabeth, Fredrick Jr., Richard, and Carol. John graduated from Brentford High School in 1957.

On November 16, 1957, John was united in marriage to Karen A. Engelhart. To this union, two children were born: Thomas M. Cowles on November 18, 1958, and Paula K. Cowles on December 13, 1959.

John worked many years at the Cenex Warehouse in Aberdeen, SD, and later farmed the family homestead near Mellette, SD.

John is survived by his granddaughters: Jennifer Cowles & Cynthia (T.J.)  Genzler; great-granddaughters: Audra, Autumn & Aubrie Genzler; sister Carol Thies; daughter-in-law Jannelle (Bill Nelson) Cowles-Nelson; his brothers/sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife Karen in 2017; son Tom in 1997; daughter Paula in 2014; siblings: Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Styles, Fredrick ‘Fred’ Cowles Jr., Richard ‘Dick’ Cowles; and great-grandson Trey in 2023.
