Joe C. Palmer, 91, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father Mark Axtmann as celebrant.
Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with military rites being conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, at the mortuary with a liturgical wake service and rosary following at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Saturday.
Joe C. Palmer was born on February 16, 1925, in Spink County, Mellette Township, to Carl and Florence (Stucker) Palmer and was the youngest of their four children.  He grew up on a farm in Mansfield, SD, and attended school in Mellette and Northville, SD.  Joe graduated from Northville High School with the Class of 1943.
In February of 1945, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country until May of 1949, when he was honorably discharged.
Joe was united in marriage to Monica Keller on February 18, 1950, in Aberdeen, SD.  Their union was blessed with two children, Joan in March of 1951 and Jim in October of 1955.  When Joe returned from serving in the Air Force in 1949, he began what would become a 35-year career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and remained employed there until the time of his retirement in 1984.  He and Monica shared 63 years of marriage before she passed away on June 11, 2013.  Joe continued to reside in Aberdeen until the time of his death.
Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 in Aberdeen.
Blessed to have shared Joe’s life is his daughter, Joan Palmer of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Debra Palmer of Pierre, SD; two grandsons, Drew (Anna) Palmer of Dardenne Prairie, MO and Bryan (Rachel) Palmer of Coon Rapids, MN; two great-granddaughters, Alaire James Palmer and Stella Magdelina Palmer; and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Monica, in June of 2013; his son, Jim, in May of 2013; his parents, Carl and Florence Palmer; his brother, Bob Palmer; and his sisters, Betty Hammer and Vivian Lawson.
Pallbearers will be:  Ed Keller, Dick Palmer, John Hammer, Max Hammer, Dennis Dabbert, Drew Palmer, Bryan Palmer, and Jim Fishbach.
