JoAnn Margaret Meier was born in Mitchell, SD, on August 24, 1936, to Antone and Barbara (Held) Meier. She was one of six children. Their family later moved to Aberdeen in 1940. JoAnn attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1954. After one year at Presentation College, she moved to San Diego, California to live with her sister. There, she married Clarence Raymond Jr. They had a son, Daniel, in 1957, and they moved to Miami, Florida, in 1958. She had five daughters while they lived in Florida. JoAnn endured the devastating loss of two daughters to Cystic Fibrosis in 1970 and 1971 and then had to face an unwanted divorce. Armed with her strong Christian faith, she moved her remaining children to Aberdeen, SD, in 1974 and attended the School of Commerce. She graduated and then worked as a bookkeeper for Ram Enterprises for over 30 years. She suffered another devastating loss in 1979 with the death of her only son in a car accident.
JoAnn met Ronald Hinman at a dance in 1989. His fabulous dancing caught her eye. He asked her to dance, and she was delighted. They were married in February of 1990, and they danced through the next 35 years together until the very end. Through the years, JoAnn also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and gardening and could not pass up a garage sale. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, belonged to the Sacred Heart Altar Society and was a Eucharistic Minister. She also belonged to Women of the Moose and the Eagles.
JoAnn was a woman who faced a lifetime of trauma and challenges and, by the grace of God, had a tremendous faith that carried her through. As a devout Catholic, her faith was the cornerstone of her existence, and she was a fierce prayer warrior. JoAnn had a kind and generous soul, a servant’s heart, and loved doing for others.
JoAnn is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ronald of Aberdeen, SD; three daughters: Debra (Terry) White of Aberdeen, SD, Donna (Ross) Ashdown of Navarre, FL, and Dawn Raymond of Farmington, MN; three grandchildren: Shannon Herzog of Minneapolis, MN, Brady Jensen of Bloomington, MN, and Kelly Herzog of Roseville, MN; three stepsons: Rocky (Cindy) Hinman of Groton, SD, Duane (Laura) Hinman of Groton, SD, and Ronald (Tasha) Hinman of Tea, SD; two stepdaughters: Teresa Ipena of Rosemount, MN and Tina (Mike) Fordham of Groton, SD; many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two brothers and one sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Denise and Diane; son, Daniel; stepson, Terry; and sisters, Carol Thurman and Donna Ryman.
