Joan Marie Scherr

Joan Marie Scherr, 63, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on March 6, 2025, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital among family and friends.

Joan’s wishes were to be cremated, and no formal services will be held.

Joan Marie Scherr was born June 21, 1961, to Joseph and Marcella (Malsom) Scherr, joining a large family that would grow to 10 brothers and sisters. In 1981, she married Kevin Weisser and started her own family, welcoming two children, Joshua and Heather.

In addition to spoiling her own kids, Joan had a passion for raising youngsters and was a daycare provider for over 30 years, including owning Lil’ Rascals Daycare in Aberdeen. And though she held other jobs throughout her life, including working at Mother Joseph Manor or the cafeteria of Presentation College, she was happiest when caring for children. She loved teaching preschool and doing arts and crafts with the kids, who always had more glitter, googly eyes and toilet paper rolls than they could ever hope to use.

Joan also had a legendary soft spot for animals, one which her own kids found and exploited quite successfully over the years. Her home was often a veritable zoo of various hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets, parakeets, fish, dogs and even a rather temperamental parrot at one point. She loved her dogs, Tasha and Ragamuffin, most of all.

Whether caring for children, the elderly, or animals, Joan always had a bigger heart than she knew what to do with—or that her famous stubbornness would let her admit. And though she was not one to ask for help, she was always certainly the first to offer it.

Joan is survived by her ex-husband, Kevin; her children, Josh Weisser, and Heather (Jeff) Kreiner; grandchildren, Auberon and Eleanor Kreiner; mother, Marcella; siblings Mark (Jacque) Scherr, Brian (Leah) Scherr, Karen (Bill) Stark, David Scherr, Randy (Mary) Scherr, Ron Scherr, Connie (Brad) Schweitzer, Elaine (Mike) Ellerbusch, and Todd (Shayla) Scherr.

Joan is preceded in death by her beloved father, Joe, and brother Joseph Jr.
