Born on July 8, 1949, to Ed and Dorothy (Sievers) Carter, Janet grew up in Redfield, SD, and graduated from Redfield High School with the class of 1967. She attended Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen and then moved to Rapid City to work. It was there that she met her true love, Dennis VonEschen. They were married on June 7, 1969.
Shortly after, Dennis went into the service, which took them to Virginia and Texas. After leaving the service, they lived in Ohio until finally settling in Aberdeen in 1975. Together, they had two children: Darcy and Darren. As her children were growing up, Janet sold Avon as a way to get out of the house and socialize with friends and family. Janet took great pride in raising her children and supporting them in their many activities, sports, and interests. She, likewise, enjoyed being with her two grandsons and three great-grandsons. Being with family always brought great joy to Janet, and despite many years of impaired health, she made every effort to be present with her family whenever possible.
As a lifelong Christian and long-time member of Plymouth Congregational Church, her faith was paramount to her. Janet was a member of the ladies’ group at her church and helped with Sunday School for many years. She was also involved in many crafting groups, both through her church and in her community. Janet was an extremely talented crafter, and her family fondly remembers the many beautifully made gift bags and cards at Christmas time, even as her health declined. She was also a gifted cook and baker, highlighting the wonderful homemaker she was. There were so many qualities and gestures of love from Janet that will be greatly missed, even as we celebrate the eternal peace of Christ that she now experiences after many years of suffering.
Janet is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Dennis; children: Darcy (Todd) Snyder of Jackson, MN, and Darren VonEschen of Bozeman, MT; grandsons: Jordan (Paige) Snyder of Bismarck, ND, and Conner (fiancée Tatiana) Snyder of Jackson, MN; and great-grandsons Ezra, Luke, and Joey. She is also survived by her siblings: Roger (Nancy) Carter, Doug (Verleen) Carter, and Sherry Aucoin; brother-in-law Chuck (Janet) VonEschen; sisters-in-law Pat Beilke and Jean Bender; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Dorothy Carter, and three brothers-in-law: Kelly Aucoin, Larry Beilke, and John Bender.
