James "Jim" Martin Winterberg

James "Jim" Martin Winterberg, 63, of Aberdeen, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Ipswich, SD, following a long and brave battle with cancer.

His memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 30, 2015, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with Pastor D.T. Rawerts presiding.

Jim's wishes were to be cremated. Burial with military honors will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

James Martin Winterberg was born on June 13, 1952, to Willis and Velma (Statema) Winterberg in Linton, ND. He was raised and attended school in Herreid, SD, graduating with the Class of 1971.

Following graduation, Jim entered the United States Army and proudly served his country for 22 years, including two tours in West Germany and one tour in Korea. He was also a Recruiting NCO in the Texas Panhandle.

During his time in the Army, Jim married Rosario S. Quezada on December 23, 1977. They were blessed with two daughters: Jacqueline and Victoria Winterberg.

After retiring from the Army, Jim moved to Aberdeen. He was united in marriage to Karen Binger. Jim then attended Northern State College, where he majored in history and received his teacher's certificate. Throughout his working career, Jim was employed at several different jobs including Liebelt Homes and teaching school in St. Francis, SD for two years, before driving taxi for over seven years.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and visiting with family and friends. He was always ready with a joke or stories about his time in the Army.

Jim is survived by his daughters: Jacqueline Winterberg and Victoria Winterberg, both of El Paso, TX; seven siblings: Kenneth Winterberg of Redfield, SD, Marian (Randy) Flitter of Groton, SD, Jean Meyer of Mankato, MN, Richard (Kathy) Meyer of Mobridge, SD, Betty Meyer of Mankato, MN, Shirley (Joe) Freed of Traer, IA and David (Sheila) Meyer of Luverne, MN; fourteen nieces and nephews: Heather Travis; Tyler, Tanner, and Thadeus (Abby) and Travis Flitter; Shelly Bieber; Heather (Justin) Lamatta; Richelle (Blake) Friend; Jeremy Meyer; Cindy (Damion) Plymesser; Brian and Tracy Butler; Noah and Ariana Meyer; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jim's parents; brother, John; and infant sister, Carol Ann, preceded him in death.
