James “Jim” Edward Gohn was born on July 31, 1942, in West Allis, WI, to George and Virginia (Mertens) Gohn. He was the eldest of five children.
While his father was deployed, Jim spent his first years on the family farm in Kennebec, SD, before moving to Aberdeen, SD, which he ever so happily called home.
Jim graduated from Aberdeen Central High School before attending Northern State University. At the age of 22, he took on the responsibility of running the family business, Jorgensen’s Mens Wear, where he dedicated over 20 years of hard work and leadership.
With great pride, he purchased his first apartment building, with many more to follow, providing affordable housing. Ironically, that first acquisition was later converted into a single dwelling that he enjoyed as his last residence.
He loved everything about Aberdeen and always dreamed of ways to improve his community. Jim dove into public service, serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the joint City and County Planning Board, President of the Northeastern Mental Health Center, and board member of the Aberdeen Development Corporation. He was honored as NSU’s “King of the Gyps” and even ran for Mayor of his beloved city.
Jim once met some students at an airport in Frankfurt, Germany, who wanted to practice their English skills. He jumped at the opportunity to share about his cherished community. The class was so enamored that he even became their class project, and letters from the entire group filled his mailbox.
Furry and feathered nature friends brought immense joy to Jim; spoiling animals was the name of his game! His buddy “Axyl” continued to make weekly visits, warming Jim’s heart to connect over a shared biscuit and ear scratch.
Grateful for having shared Jim’s life are his children: Miranda Gohn of Litchfield, MN, Steve (Kris) Gohn of Huron, SD, and Bea (Jim) Kaiser of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren: Madisyn Gohn, Riley (Destinee) Gohn, Payson Gohn, Marrien (Alyssa) Gohn, and Jerzy Horst; siblings: Dick (Linda) Gohn, Tom (Marcia) Gohn, and Mary Hermansen; and sister-in-law Donna Gohn.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and Virginia; brother, Bill Gohn; and brother-in-law, Rick Hermansen.
Please honor Jim by taking a moment to appreciate what you love most about your community, share some seed or breadcrumbs with the birds, write a note of congratulations or encouragement, or share a smile with someone who really needs it.
