Ivan Guthmiller

Ivan Allen Guthmiller, 90, of Leola, South Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of those who knew him.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel, with Rev. George Parmeter officiating.

Interment with Military Honors will be at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.

A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the interment at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel. Visitation continues one hour before the service.

Ivan Allen Guthmiller was born on January 13, 1936, in Leola, South Dakota, to Emanuel and Emilia (Meidinger) Guthmiller. He was the youngest of 10 children. He grew up on the family farm near Leola and attended country school there, beginning a life rooted in family, hard work, and ingenuity.

Ivan proudly served in the Armed Forces from December 4, 1958, until September 3, 1960, spending part of his service stationed in Germany. Ivan married Shirley Jean Milbrandt on September 5, 1965, and to this union were born a daughter, Michelle, and a son, Alan. On June 3, 1978, Ivan married Jane Stein. Together they made their home in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where Ivan was employed at K.O. Lee for many years.

Ivan was known for his remarkable creativity and his ability to turn an idea into reality. Ivan and Jane attended numerous Bike Shows throughout South Dakota. He was an accomplished bicycle builder and inventor whose imagination and craftsmanship set him apart. Among his many creations were the High Wheel Bike, the Pee-Wee Herman bike, the Evel Knievel bike, and the Batmobile bike. His unique creations continue to be admired and can be seen at the Pioneer Museum in Murdo, South Dakota.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Jane Guthmiller, of Aberdeen; children, Alan Guthmiller, of NV, and Michelle Clark of MO; sister, Gloria (Calvin) Heitzman, of Mitchell; brother-in-law, Leo Stein, of Aberdeen; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Guthmiller, of Aberdeen and Linda Ketterling, of Ellendale, ND.

He was preceded in death by siblings Virginia (John) Hahn, Darlene (Clem) Gisi, Doris (Pat) Regan, Ruby Guthmiller, Denver Guthmiller, Milbert (Violet) Guthmiller, Victor (Verna) Guthmiller, and Myron (Barb) Guthmiller; and other beloved family members.

Ivan leaves behind a legacy of family, service, craftsmanship, creativity, and memories that will not soon be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his remarkable creations and the stories surrounding them will continue to keep his memory alive. May he rest in peace.
