Irene Margaret Schaeffer was born on January 18, 1929, to John and Theresia (Gross) Schaeffer in Aberdeen, SD, and was the youngest in the family. She grew up near the man-made Richmond Lake and had wonderful memories of the fun times growing up on the family farm. Irene graduated from high school in 1946 with "a reserved sweetness" printed next to her picture in the yearbook.

She was united in marriage to Ervin Schlickenmyer on October 26, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. The couple farmed near Leola, SD, until 1955, when they moved to Burbank, California. In 1960, they moved to Granada Hills, California. Irene was employed as an office worker during her years in California and made many friends there. Irene and Ervin returned to Aberdeen in 1985. The couple shared over 64 years of marriage before Ervin passed away, almost exactly one month to the day before Irene, on August 28, 2014.

Irene was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed volunteering for R.S.V.P. and had a fun and exciting life with her husband, which included traveling to many states, until Irene's health slowed her down. She also loved her home and visiting friends. In the summer months, Irene enjoyed planting flowers and watching them grow.

Blessed to have shared Irene's life are her sister, Gertrude Mary Brown of Aberdeen, and many nieces and nephews.

Irene's husband, parents, five brothers, (one in infancy), and four sisters preceded her in death.
