Hilda Sophia Haggerty

Mass of Christian burial for Hilda Sophia Haggerty, 72, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 15, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with her son, Father Shaun T. Haggerty, Celebrant. Present to do the Final Commendation will be Most Reverend Paul J. Swain. Priests of the Sioux Falls Diocese will be con-celebrating.

Burial follows at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Liturgical Wake Service being held at 7:00 p.m.

Hilda passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Hilda Sophia (Wanttie) Haggerty was born April 13, 1943, in Hecla, SD, to Victor Nicholas and Lempi Sophia (Havisto) Wanttie. She grew up with several foster families including the Martin Ronning family. Hilda attended high school in Barnard, SD, and was Miss Barnard in the South Dakota Snow Queen Festival. In 1961, Hilda graduated from high school, then moved to Minneapolis and worked for Northwestern Bell. In 1967, she returned to Aberdeen to earn her nursing degree.

Hilda married Ike Haggerty on June 28, 1969, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. They made their home in Sioux Falls before settling in Sisseton for 35 years. They returned to Aberdeen, where they continued to reside until the time of her death.

Hilda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W Auxiliary in Sisseton. She proudly became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen in 2012. She enjoyed gardening, shopping, dancing, and music. Above all, she loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Blessed to have shared Hilda's life are her husband of 46 years, Ike Haggerty; her children: Andy (Angie) Haggerty, Alexandria, MN, Michael Haggerty, Brookings, SD, Christine Haggerty, Aberdeen, Shane Haggerty, St. Paul, MN, and Father Shaun Haggerty, Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren: Reece, Katie, Ashley, Alyssa, Abbigail, Ava, and Isabella Haggerty; brothers: Leonard Wanttie and Jerry Wanttie, Aberdeen; and sisters: Evelyn Raymond, Aberdeen and Mavis Williams, Missouri.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ralph Wanttie; and sister, Darlene Wylie.
