Born on July 23, 1932, in Hillsview, SD, to Michael and Louise Hoerner, Floyd was deeply proud of his service in the U.S. Army from 1953–1955. He loved sharing stories of his time in Camp Rucker, AL, and of his parachute training with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

After returning home, Floyd farmed on the Hoerner & Sons homestead near Bowdle, SD. On February 19, 1966, he married the love of his life, Mary Lyn Grismer, and together they raised five children. In 1972, they moved to Hosmer, SD, to begin their own dairy farm before settling near Frederick in 1978, where Floyd continued farming until his retirement in 2012. The couple then moved into town to continue their 49 wonderful years together.

A devoted Catholic, Floyd was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church in Westport, SD. His unwavering faith in Jesus Christ shaped his life and guided the way he raised his children.

In 2018, following a stroke, Floyd moved to The Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD, where he lived for seven years. There, he formed heartfelt bonds with many staff members and came to lovingly refer to it as “home.” He continued to enjoy farm life at the Schallenkamp farm, attended family gatherings, and celebrated milestones with his children and grandchildren—remaining active and full of joy throughout his later years.

Floyd’s passions included farming, fishing, hunting, gardening, and visiting the sale barn. His garden harvests were shared generously with family and friends, and weekends often found him with a fishing pole in hand. Autumn was his favorite time of year—filled with harvest, pheasant hunts, and family gatherings. He also very much enjoyed the annual family gatherings for golf, canning, and making deer sausage.

Floyd will be remembered for his love of dancing polkas and waltzes, family trips (especially to South Carolina with Mary), his fondness of listening to Johnny Cash, and the countless memories made with those he loved. Above all, he will be cherished for the love he poured into his family—teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, dance, play cards, and garden. Grandpa Floyd spent endless hours throwing a ball, pushing swings, and giving wagon rides.

He is survived by his five children, Mark (Sandy) of Frederick, JoAnn (Mike) of Rapid City, Bernice (John) of Bridgewater, Louise (Rob) of Aberdeen, and GeorgieAnn (Jesse) of Mount Pleasant, SC; along with 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his brother, Norbert (Rosie).

Floyd is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, his parents, Mike and Louise, his brothers, Ray and Paul, and his sister-in-law, Barbara.

Through life’s challenges, Floyd carried himself with dignity and steadfast faith, always finding joy in God’s love and sharing kindness wherever he went. His family and friends loved him deeply and will forever be blessed by his example.

Floyd’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the care and compassion shown to him over the years at Diamond Care Center and in his final days at Freeman Regional Health. To all of you who have made a difference, thank you!

If love could have kept him with us, he would have lived forever.
