The two of them owned and operated a store in Long Lake, and then moved to Aberdeen, SD, in 1950, where they remained throughout their lives.

Esther was a talented seamstress. She made her daughters’ clothing and also did some sewing for other people. She also was a great cook, and her children and their friends, and also her grandchildren, loved her German cooking, especially her kuchen.

To supplement the family income over the years, Esther worked for numerous families (cleaning their homes and helping with their children).
