Elroy G. Kaul was born on July 25, 1938, in Hosmer, SD. He was the proud son of Gottlieb and Katie (Eisenbeisz) Kaul. Elroy attended school in Hosmer until his family moved to Custer, SD, due to his father's illness. The family then moved to Aberdeen, where Elroy attended and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the Class of 1956.
Elroy was united in marriage to Connie Albrecht on October 20, 1956, in Aberdeen. From this union six children were born. Elroy worked construction for many years, starting at the age of 16, and was a self-employed contractor. In 2003, he retired from Zion Lutheran Church following a 17-year career of custodial work. He continued to make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death.
Elroy was a talented do-it-yourself, "Mr. Fix It" man and was able to fix anything that needed repair. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. Elroy enjoyed the old-time Westerns and had a special admiration for his hero, John Wayne. Above all, Elroy loved his family and took great pride and joy in watching his children and grandchildren's accomplishments.
Blessed to have shared his life are his wife, Connie of Aberdeen; six children: Ritchie (Trish) Kaul of Fargo, ND, Becky Fjelstad of Bath, SD, Robin Kaul of Aberdeen, Shelly Grandbois of Rosemount, MN, Renee (Todd) Black of Aberdeen and Randy (Camille) Kaul of Aberdeen; and three sisters, Sharlene (Gerald) Adam of Bakersfield, CA, Vivian (Wenzel) Likness of Yorba Linda, CA and Bonnie (Robert) Lamont of Aberdeen. Elroy was also the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Heather (Daniel) Van Englanhoven, Ryan (Ginger) Kaul, Allison Grandbois, Brittany Black, Brandon Black, Bryton Black, Justen Gelling, Sydney Gelling and Riley Kaul; and three great-grandchildren: Breanna Kaul, Eva Van Englanhoven and Cora Van Englanhoven. Elroy also held a very special place in his heart for his cat, "Tomi Jane" and his daycare dog, "Charlie".
Elroy's parents; brother, Roland Kaul; sister, Ardella Westley; one infant brother; one infant granddaughter, Tohni; and brother-in-law, Stanley Westley, preceded him in death.
