Elizabeth “Betty” Hansen was born on December 17, 1922, in Mina, SD, to Tom and Elizabeth (Baer) Hansen. She attended country schools then moved to Aberdeen to attend high school. Betty graduated from Central High School and attended Northern State College. Education was extremely invaluable to Betty and she was dedicated to doing whatever it took to gain an education. She earned her first job at Aberdeen National Bank by walking up the president’s desk and telling him that she wanted to work there. He obliged, and Betty enjoyed her employment there for 28 years.
Betty was united in marriage to Earl Flahaven on July 8, 1946, and they had four children, Pat, Pam, Dean and Dale. They shared over 20 years of marriage together before Earl’s passing in 1967. Betty continued to make her home in Aberdeen, living independently for over 40 years. She later moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor, where she lived for 17 years.
Betty spent her life caring for others. She volunteered at Avera St. Luke’s for over 5,300 hours, a testament to her dedicated and relentless soul! She had an open heart to all, and sincerely cared for everyone she met. Her genuine love and empathy will be greatly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing her.
Grateful to have shared Betty’s life are her sons: Pat (Carol) Flahaven of Redwood Falls, MN, and Dale Flahaven of Aberdeen, SD; grandsons: Tim (Stacy) Flahaven of Garretson, SD, and Todd Flahaven of Redwood Falls, MN; great-grandchildren: Collin(Samantha) Flahaven of Milnor, ND, and Chloe Flahaven of Garretson, SD; son-in-law, Jeff Barber of Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; daughter, Pam Barber; son, Dean Flahaven; six sisters; and three brothers.
