Elizabeth "Betty" A. Stierwalt

Elizabeth A. "Betty" Stierwalt, 105, of Aberdeen, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor Retirement Community in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Avenue SE, Aberdeen with Father Mark Lichter as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, at the mortuary followed by a liturgical wake service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at church on Saturday.

Elizabeth "Betty" Adler was born to Anton and Anna (Hammrich) Adler on December 14, 1910, in Ipswich, SD. She attended school in Belle Township and Ipswich High School. Following high school graduation, Betty furthered her education at the Aberdeen Business College and following graduation, began working for the Aberdeen Credit Bureau in 1928. Later she became the manager of the Credit Bureau in Redfield, SD.

In 1931, Betty was united in marriage to LaVerne Stierwalt. The couple made Aberdeen their home during their entire married life except for the two years her husband was serving in the United States Army during WWII. In 1936, Betty became employed by the Plymouth Clothing Company in Aberdeen, where she worked for 25 years.

Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen and was an active member of Band 1 of the Altar Society for many years as well as a life member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She also was a charter member of the Avera St. Luke's Auxiliary, where she volunteered many hours of her time. Betty also enjoyed membership in the Lee Park Ladies Golf Club and the Dirigo Club, where she earned a Degree of Honor. In 2010, Betty was honored by the RSVP Group of Aberdeen for dedicating 35 years of service to her community.

Betty was an avid Bridge player and belonged to many Bridge clubs. She was also known as "The Cookie Lady", as she enjoyed delivering cookies to all the shut-ins.

Betty is survived by one daughter-in-law, Carol (Jim) Durand of Aberdeen; two granddaughters, Carlie Stierwalt of Aberdeen and Kelly (Cory) Rath of Plymouth, MN; two great-grandchildren, Lily and Carver Rath; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, LaVerne Stierwalt; their only son, Bill Stierwalt; her parents; two sisters; and six brothers.
