Eileen Jane Werre was born August 24, 1930, to Reinhold and Nela (Meyer) Werre in Eureka, SD. Eileen attended school in Eureka and graduated in 1948. Following high school, she began working at Bell Telephone Company in Eureka.
On August 11, 1953, Eileen married Eugene Mattern in the Catholic Church in Hillsview, SD. The couple first met at a dance, which was an activity they enjoyed together for many years. They resided in Selby, SD where they raised their five children; James, Mary, Kathryn, Barb, and Jane. In 1970, the family relocated to Aberdeen, SD. Eileen then began working at Control Data until her retirement in 1989. Her greatest joy in life was her family.
After her retirement, Eugene and Eileen enjoyed traveling. Many good times and friends were made on the numerous bus trips that took them from coast to coast and points in between. They particularly enjoyed the many cruises that were taken with their family.
Eileen was a tremendous cook and took much pleasure in preparing meals for her family and friends. She was well known for preparing German food, and her recipe for kuchen was requested by many.
Eileen had many friends and looked forward to the coffee and card parties. Eileen was a devout Catholic and her faith in God was a central point in her life. She could often be found reciting the rosary as part of her daily prayers.
Grateful for having shared Eileen’s life are her husband, Eugene, of 69 years; one son, James (Lu Ann) Mattern of Aurora, CO; four daughters: Mary (Jerry) Sandmeier of Aberdeen, Kathryn (Jeffrey) Krause of Omaha, NE, Barb (Rick) Grieben of Aberdeen, and Jane (Kurt) Reder of Watertown, SD; and she adored her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to thank Avera Mother Joseph Manor and the staff for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Eileen.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Roncalli Catholic School System in Aberdeen, SD.
