Earl James Ferguson, "Fergy", was born to Floyd and Mabel (Bross) Ferguson on a farm near Ashton, SD, on March 30, 1921. Later he moved with his parents near Cresbard, SD, where he attended school for four years before moving to Chelsea, SD.

Earl joined the National Guard 147th Unit in Aberdeen, SD, in 1940. He was sent to Fort Ord, CA, for one year, and then was sent overseas. He was honorably discharged in June of 1945.
