Doris Marie Beckler Engel, 92, of Aberdeen, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, 502 South Lincoln Street, Aberdeen, with Pastor Eldon Reich and Pastor Dave Almlie presiding. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.
Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Memorials are preferred by the family.
Doris Marie Zick was born on February 26, 1922, to Lawrence and Lillian (Park) Zick on her grandparents' farm northeast of Aberdeen in Bath Township. She attended grade school in Ordway, SD and was a graduate of Columbia High School in Columbia, SD.
Doris married Everett Walter Beckler on October 6, 1940. They farmed and made their home southeast of Aberdeen. Doris enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in her beautiful yard and flower gardens. Her love of gardening led her to employment at Lakeland Nursery. She also worked at The Aberdeen Crockery in downtown Aberdeen. Doris and Everett shared over 46 years together before he passed away in 1987.
On June 24, 1989, Doris was united in marriage to Cal Engel. The couple made their home on the Beckler farm until 1991, when they moved into Aberdeen. Doris was a resident of Aberdeen Health and Rehabilitation at the time of her death.
Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, where she was active in the Methodist Church Women. She was also very involved in her community, serving as Secretary of the first Bath P.T.A., as well as holding memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose Chapter 178, Kiwanis, Aberdeen Area Seniors and a past member of the Golden Pheasant Extension Club.
Thankful for having shared her life are her husband, Cal Engel of Aberdeen; her six children: Allen (Joyce) Beckler of Aberdeen, Wayne (Jean) Beckler of Rapid City, SD, Darlene (Gary) Dunwoody of Aberdeen, Eileen Kriech of Aberdeen, Loren (Diane) Beckler of Hermosa, SD, and Charlene (Neil) Johnson of Aberdeen; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; two stepsons, Allen Engel of Aberdeen and James (Darcy) Engel of Papillion, NE, and three step-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Everett; parents, one sister, Alice Walterman; one infant brother, one grandson, and one granddaughter.
