Donnell Marie Black

Donnell Marie Black, 61, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Memorial Service is 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 3, 2021 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Aberdeen, with Fr. Richard Zephier officiating.

Burial is at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the mortuary, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church.

Donnell Marie Black was born July 2, 1959 to Donald and Bille (Ruff) Black in Pine Ridge, SD.  Her family moved to Flandreau, SD and then to Ellendale, ND where she attended elementary school. In 1969, they moved to Aberdeen and Donnell attended Holgate and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1977.  Donnell attended Northern State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.  She was employed with Indian Health Services for over 30 years and retired on December 31, 2016.

After retirement, Donnell continued working part time at the YMCA teaching water aerobics.  She served as a church counselor at Thunder Head Episcopal Camp in the Black Hills for many years.  Donnell enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader.  She loved her nieces and nephews and enjoyed doting on them tremendously.  Donnell had a beautiful voice and sang at numerous weddings and funerals.  Donnell’s very positive outlook on life always made people comfortable and had a way of making people feel good.

Grateful for having shared Donnell’s life is her mother, Bille Black of Aberdeen; her siblings: Jerry (Jackie) Black, Mike Black, Kelly (Derry) Fritz all of Billings, MT; uncles, Dr. Richard Black and Roger Hutcheson; her aunts: Bobby Pond, Lola Lessert, Emma Hutcheson, Jane Harroway; nieces and nephews: Eric (Marie) Blumhardt, Shanda (Eric) Rieker, Janessa (Ryan) Fawcett, Alex Black, Stephanie (Matt) Waller, Jennifer (David) Carpenter, Derek and Danny Fritz; great-nieces and great-nephews: Austyn and Masyn Fawcett, Noah, Natalie, and Jacob Blumhardt, Rylee Rieker, and Jack, Will and Beau Waller; and her furry companion, Jasper the cat.

Donnell was preceded in death by her father, Donald Black, her grandparents, and her step-father, Del Claymore.
