Donald Kay Richard was born September 24, 1938 to Floyd D. and Alma J. Richard in Minneapolis, MN. The family moved to Aberdeen where Don grew up. The family lived on the corner of State Street and 2nd Avenue SE for many years.

The family belonged to Sacred Heart Parish. Don attended Munroe School and later was part of the sheltered workshop system which his parents helped start in Aberdeen. Later it became the Adjustment Training Center and was located under the water tower in Aberdeen.

There Don worked for a number of years making wooden stakes for the SD Highway Department in building new roads throughout the state. Don was proud of his work, and would often point out his stakes as the family went on road trips.

Don was a sports enthusiast and knew every baseball player’s stats. He was a bit of a savant when it came to knowing sports statistics. For a number of years in his youth, Don was the Bat Boy for the Aberdeen Pheasants. Don so loved baseball, and was a Bat Boy with his beloved team, the Aberdeen Smittys. Don was a lifelong Minnesota Twins fan.

For the past many years, Don lived in Huron and was part of the Huron Area Center for Independence. This past September Don celebrated his 80th birthday with an open house at his group home in Huron. Dozens of family and friends helped Don celebrate; many more sent cards and presents.

Don is survived by his brother Gordon (Alma) of Alcester, SD; sister, Jean Jones of Aberdeen. He is in eternity with his parents, Floyd and Alma and his brother, Paul, who have gone on before him. Don had many nieces and nephews.
