Dick (John Richard) Kornder was born on February 9, 1939, in Armour, South Dakota, to Kenneth and Iola (maiden name) Kornder. He was raised in Tyndall alongside his brother, Dennis. Following his father’s death, Dick was blessed to have his stepfather, Dick Mudder, become an important man in his life.

Dick graduated from Tyndall High School in 1957 and went on to earn his teaching degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota. On August 29, 1959, he married the love of his life, Judy Havorka. They were blessed with six children: Dennis, Jay, Pat, Mike, Susan, and Sarah.

The family moved throughout South Dakota and spent a short time in Tennessee as Dick pursued his career in education. In 1970, they settled in Aberdeen, where Dick began a successful banking career with First National Bank and later Wells Fargo, from which he retired. Everyone who knew Dick knows he could not sit still, and his retirement did not last long. He became director at the YMCA, which was another family and home for Dick. He took great pride in directing a campaign to build a new facility for the Aberdeen Family YMCA.

Dick was also very good with carpentry and woodworking. There were countless projects he was working on at any given moment, and he would always be willing to lend his time and talents to family, friends, and neighbors.

Dick continued in his natural ability to ask for donations and assisted other agencies in Aberdeen, such as Safe Harbor, BMX, and eventually the YMCA again, with fundraising campaigns. Dick took pride in all the work he did, but more so in the people he got to know well in the community and in continuing to support Aberdeen’s growth for future generations. Dick was on countless boards and supported many non-profit agencies throughout his lifetime.

Dick and Judy shared a deep love for each other and their children. He was a very devoted father and always made sure everyone received good advice and their needs were met. He loved his grandchildren and looked forward to creating memories and spending time with them. Dick’s measure of success in his life was not wealth but generosity, kindness, humility, and grace. He was the utmost ethical and responsible person. Dick had many good friends, whom he loved deeply.

Dick is survived by his children, Dennis (Paula) Kornder, Jay (Kathy Porter) Kornder, Susan (Tom) Vogel, and Sarah (Jackson) Crawford; and seven grandchildren: Joel, Ryan, Matt, Lucas, Emma, Owen, and Jack.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; sons, Mike and Pat; and brother, Dennis.
