Dennis Michael Curry was born on November 8, 1969, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, California, to Mary Ann Stephens-Curry and Anthony (Tony) Roger Curry. He joined his older sister, Peggy Dee Curry, at their family home. Most of Dennis' childhood was spent in Whittier, where he attended Sunny Side Elementary School. He had a best friend named Roger Banken, and they enjoyed riding bikes and skateboards together. They would sit in the front yard to watch his sister, Peggy, and her friend Deanna as they practiced their cheerleading.
His father, Tony, often took the family to Huntington Beach and Redondo Beach. Tony would go fishing off the pier, as Dennis’ mom, sister, and friend, Jamie Gerritsen, would spend their time on the sand. Dennis would be digging giant holes in the sand, making friends with somebody, or getting into a frisbee game. Their mom would gather them up and walk them over to McDonald’s for lunch. Sometimes, Tony would take them to Redondo Beach, where they would spend most of the day at the arcades. Dennis would be a pest to his sister Peggy, and they would have spit wars.
During family road trips, Dennis was always the one to cross the line in the back seat. When his dad had had enough, he would pull over to the side of the road and say, “You kids are going to walk home.” In trips from Whittier to Vegas, they would see lots of tumbleweeds, and their dad, Tony, would joke that the tumbleweeds were balls of hair rolling across the road. Dennis and Peggy would get super excited to see the glow of the Vegas lights shining over the mountains as they got closer.
They would also travel to Michigan to visit relatives in a Pinto Station Wagon pulling a camper. Sometimes their aunt Dee Dee and cousins, Gilbert and Mike, would join them on these trips. The kids would ride on the back and get the truckers to blow their horns. Following his parents' divorce, Dennis split his time between living with his mother and his father, who had moved to Sacramento. Tony later married Marina, Dennis’ stepmother, and added his half-sisters, Debbie Lilybelle Curry and Joehanna Flores, to the family.
Around 1984, Dennis’ grandmother, Shirley Montoya, mother, Mary and his sister, Peggy moved to South Dakota. Dennis initially stayed living with his dad, but later relocated to South Dakota, where he graduated from Central High School. He pursued a career in plumbing, working for his uncle at RDR Plumbing and Heating, where he obtained his plumbing license.
Dennis had two children: a son, Kylie James Curry, with Lorie DeLap, and a daughter Cassandra Curry, with Annette Feiock. Dennis was a proud father who loved fishing and playing video games with his daughter, Cassandra “Chicki” when she was young.
Unfortunately, after a severe workplace accident left him injured and unable to work full-time, Dennis' health deteriorated in his final years. He took joy in family gatherings and holiday get-togethers, making sure everyone knew he was present. His spirit is greatly missed.
Dennis is survived by his mother, Mary Stephens; step-mother, Marina Curry; daughter, Cassandra Curry; son, Kyle Kemp; sisters: Peggy DenBesten, Debbie Lilybelle Curry, and Joehanna Flores; brother-in-law, Doug DenBesten; nephews, Jamie Dennis Hubert (Curry), Craig Douglas DenBesten, and Brett Songer; and niece: Stephanie DenBesten
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Anthony (Tony) Roger Curry; his grandmothers Shirley Montoya, Douglas, and Graciela, his grandfathers, Stephens and Curry; and his second cousin, Danny Rux Junior.
