Delphine E. Janusz, 89, of Aberdeen, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 18, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Avenue SE, Aberdeen, with Father Michael Kapperman, Celebrant.

Burial follows at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, with a liturgical wake service and rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that memorials be sent to the Aberdeen Catholic Foundation, 13 2nd Avenue SE - Suite #6, Aberdeen, SD  57401, to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and Roncalli Catholic Schools.

Delphine E. Szukala was born to Joseph “Papa Jo” and Josephine “Nanny Jo” (Kobylecki) Szukala on February 13, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois.

Del married Dr. Albin Janusz on September 1, 1951 and they raised ten children together before Dr. Janusz’s passing in 1998.

Del was elected to the Brown County Commission in 1974 as the first Republican elected in 12 years. She was elected Commission Chair in 1976 and then was elected Aberdeen Mayor in 1981.  She was the city’s first, and only, woman to serve in that capacity.  She held that office for five years until 1986.

The most important things in Del’s life were her complete love and faith in God, her husband and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and her love for the Aberdeen community.

She is survived by her children: Mary Beth (Ralph) Berreth and son, Adam, Gregory Janusz, Marjorie (Paul) Barbouletos and sons, James and Stephen, Timothy Janusz and children: Jessica, Jillian, Jamison, Jennifer, Jenea and Josiah, Kathryn (William) Hettinger and children: Brian, Amanda, and Eric, Thomas Janusz and  daughter, Elizabeth, Anthony (Paulette) Janusz and children:  Andrew, Erin, and Alec, John (Dee) Janusz and sons, Doug and Connor, Ann (Joseph) Mangiameli and daughters, Lauren and Sara, and children of deceased son David, Stacey (Travis Bennett) and their children, Taylor and Braiden and Joe Janusz; her sisters, Mari Schala and Celeste (Glenn) Forbes; as well as many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Albin; her son, David; her grandson, John Barbouletos; her parents, Joseph and Josephine Szukala; and her sister, Jerrolyn McCauley.
