Daniel Patrick Martin was born March 17, 1950, to Harvey and Agnes (Fischer) Martin in Pierre, SD. He was a St. Patrick’s Day baby and was given Patrick for his middle name.

Danny showed a zest for life at a young age and kept his family guessing what kind of shenanigans he could get into. He graduated from Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School in May 1968 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and received an honorable discharge in May 1970.

Danny met the love of his life, Gail Traversie, in August 1970 and wasted no time in getting her to marry him. They were united in marriage on February 12, 1971. Together, they raised their family of three daughters, Karen, Dawnelle, and Misty, and one son, Chad. They were blessed with 11 grandchildren, leaving them with a lifetime of invaluable knowledge, memories, and stories.

Danny was a self-taught journeyman and Master Meatcutter for many years. He taught an extracurricular class on the art of meat cutting at the Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School for one semester. Throughout his life, he was employed by Lynn’s Super Value, Safeway, Aberdeen American News, Sears, and Phillip Morris Tobacco Company, and then worked for the United States Postal Service for 20 years. Danny retired in March 2012.

Danny was also a successful business man. The joy and celebration of fireworks led him to open and operate Martin’s Fireworks with family operated businesses in Bath, SD, and Eagle Butte, SD, for 35 years. A display in his honor will be held at a later date.

Danny’s greatest joys were his loving wife, children, and grandchildren, attending their school and sports activities. Danny made friends with everyone he met and was a natural conversationalist. His favorite pastime was to brag about his children and grandchildren and share jokes and stories. He was an avid sports fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins, Wild, and the Boston Celtics.

Grateful and blessed for having shared his life are his wife of 53 years, Gail Martin; daughters: Karen E. Traversie Umholtz, Dawnelle (Jeff) Martin-Sobb, and Misty Martin; son: Chad (Terri) Martin; sisters: Mary Rousseau, Susie Rousseau, Marilyn Balderas, and Eunice (Marcus) Hollow Horn; brothers: LaVerne Martin and David “Tiny” (Roxee Holloway) Martin; grandchildren: Brandon, Chasen, Lakota, Emerson, Parker, Salinger, Oliver, Alexis, Luke, Terron, and Tavia; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Those who welcomed him home include his grandparents; parents, Harvey and Agnes; brother, Joseph; sister, Shirley; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
