Clayton Dale Myren, 86, of Mound City, passed away August 24, 2018, the day after sharing his 55th wedding anniversary with his loving wife, Jan.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Friday, October 12, 2018, at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20801 Pleasant Valley Drive, Sturgis, SD  57785.  His family will host a gathering of all friends and family following the funeral and burial in a private room at the Pizza Ranch, 1556 Luna Drive, Rapid City, SD.

Clayton Dale Myren, known by all as “Dale”, was born on June 7, 1932, to Palmer Myren and Freda (Bender) Myren.  He grew up on the family farm in rural Campbell County and attended a one-room rural school until high school.  He graduated from Glenham High School in 1950.  He always joked that he was proud to have graduated somewhere in the top ten students in his class.  He would then gleefully note that there were only about ten students.

Dale attended South Dakota State University for a semester before enlisting in the United States Air Force.  He became an electronic specialist and worked exclusively on the cutting-edge radar technology utilized in the F-86 Sabre Jet.  He particularly enjoyed his deployments in England and North Africa.  He maintained lifelong friendships with the men he met while serving his country.  He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, including service as the VFW Post Commander.

When he met Janice Rae Scott it was love at first sight.  They were married two weeks later.  They were inseparable for the next 55 years.  They started their married lives as farmers.  Times were lean.  Dale was approached by local community leaders about whether he would consider becoming the manager of a local hospital.  Never one to shy away from a challenge, Dale undertook an intensive training from hospital managers in Sioux Falls.  After a short transitionary period with Benedictine Sisters, Dale took over as Administrator of the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven, South Dakota.  In 1972, he became the Administrator of the Mobridge Medical Clinic, a position he held until his retirement in 1989.

Dale was always committed to his community.  He served on the Walworth County Board of Development and the Mobridge City Council.  He was a real estate broker and salesman and was associated with Target Realty and Sittner Realty.

Dale was immensely proud of his two children (Shauna Myren Fitzgerald and Scott Myren) and his grandchildren (Teague Fitzgerald, Keegan Fitzgerald, Tessa Myren, and Isabel Myren.)  He was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer Myren and Freda Myren and his daughter, Shauna Myren Fitzgerald.

In lieu of flowers, Dale and his family would prefer memorials to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
