Charles R. Jungwirth, 87, of Providence, RI, and formerly of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father Mark Axtmann as celebrant.

Burial, with military rites, will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the mortuary, followed by a liturgical wake service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Charles Raymond Jungwirth was born December 15, 1929, in Zell, SD, to Edward and Marie (Puetz) Jungwirth.

He was a graduate of Northern State College in Aberdeen and Brown University in Providence, RI.  Charles served as Principal for Highmore High School in Highmore, South Dakota.  After receiving his Master’s Degree from Brown University, he became a Biology Teacher at Roger Williams University for over 25 years and was the college’s Ombudsman.

Charles was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and received his Honorable Discharge in 1952.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 25 in Pawtucket, RI and a member of Saint Martha’s Parish since 1968.

Charles was united in marriage to Veretta G. (Mielke) Jungwirth.  The couple shared 61 years together.

In addition to his wife Veretta, Charles leaves one daughter, Debra Miller of East Providence; two grandsons, Gregory E. Miller and Ethan A. Miller; two sisters, Doris (Don) Halvorson and Caroyle (Larry) O’Loughlin; one brother, Gordon (Betty) Jungwirth; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ione (Jarvis) Brown; and three brothers:  Thomas, Kenneth (Maryann), and Barry (Mary) Jungwirth.
