Catherine was born September 5, 1925, to Lorenz and Katherine (Glatt) Engelhardt on their homestead near Venturia, ND, where she spent most of her youth. She was the 11th of 12 children, ten of whom lived to adulthood. During her teen years, she moved with her parents to Zeeland, ND, and then to Aberdeen, where she ran a grinder at K.O. Lee during World War II.

She married Thomas M. Seiler on December 11, 1945, at Fort Lauderdale, FL, where Tom was serving in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, they farmed near Westport, SD, for four years. They then moved into Westport, where Tom owned and operated Westport Grain and Coal Company from 1951 to 1961, when they moved to Aberdeen and Tom began his 40-year career as a Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company agent. Catherine remained in Aberdeen until 2012, when she moved to be near some of her children.

A "stay-at-home" mom to eight children, she enjoyed attending their sports and school activities and, later, crocheting afghans and baby blankets for them and their children. She was an avid Vikings, Broncos, Twins and Rockies fan. She enjoyed traveling and, in later years, visiting casinos near where she and Tom traveled to visit their widely scattered children.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 2008 and their son Thomas G. Seiler in 2010, grandson Christopher R. Seiler in 1974, great-grandson Ryker T. Seiler in 2013, and all her siblings.

Surviving Catherine are four sons: Gary (Rose) Seiler of Angola, NY, Keith Seiler and Stewart (Fae) Seiler of Denver, CO and Bruce (Nicola) Seiler of Seattle, WA; three daughters: Sandra (Lee) Preble of Amarillo, TX, Sheryl (Bob) Schumacher of Sioux Falls, SD, and Linda Seiler (Michael Nagle) of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter-in-law Joni Seiler; nine grandchildren: Kirt (Brandi) Seiler, Joey (Melisa) Seiler, Brian Schumacher, Brent (Megan) Schumacher, Sam (Nicole) Seiler, Ben Seiler, Stewart (Cara Alire) Seiler, Chandler (Brandon) Wolf and Graeson Seiler; and great-grandchildren: Tye and Zachary Seiler, Tommy Seiler, Addison and Collin Schumacher, Ryker D. Seiler and Quinn Wolf; and sisters-in-law Ida Engelhardt, Bernice Wolf, Mary Ann Wolf and Veronica Meier.
