Catherine B. Heier was born May 29, 1927, to John J. and Julia (Harty) Heier in Hosmer, SD.  She was raised in this area and attended rural schools.

Catherine was united in marriage to Wilfred J. Kappenman on October 13, 1947.  The couple made their home and farmed in the Hillsview, SD area for forty years.  They later moved to Oakes, ND, where they resided for six years before moving to Aberdeen in 1986.  While living in Aberdeen, Catherine worked as one of the custodians for Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years.  Wilfred passed away in 2005 and Catherine continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.

Catherine, “Katie”, was an excellent seamstress often sewing complete outfits for special occasions, holidays and everything in between for her children as well as herself.  She enjoyed cooking and baking and had the ability to orchestrate the feeding of an army of people including family, friends, and relatives at any given time all the while keeping the household running smoothly.  Catherine enjoyed gardening and raising peonies.  Once retired, Catherine continued to show her love of family by babysitting her many grandchildren and inviting them to live at her home if need be.  She and her husband, Wilfred, also enjoyed square dancing in their retirement years.  Catherine was a woman of strong faith and we find comfort in the fact that she is now at peace with her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Blessed to have shared in Catherine’s life are her children:  Theresa (Adam) Heilman of Hosmer, SD, Gwen (John) Malsam of Mellette, SD, Agatha (Craig) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, Jerome Kappenman of Gwinner, ND, Kenneth (Elaine) Kappenman and Damian (Martha) Kappenman, both of Eureka, SD, Tim Kappenman of Edgeley, ND, and Alfred (Heather) Kappenman of Ellendale, ND; her brothers:  Albert Heier and Eugene Heier, both of Aberdeen and Larry Heier of Oakes, ND; her sisters:  Regina Ries, Annie Kolash and Lorenzia Oakes, all of Aberdeen; 34 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred; one son, Terrance Kappenman; one infant daughter, Angela Kappenman; one grandson, Brason Kappenman; one daughter-in-law, Susan Kappenman; her parents, John and Julia; and one brother, Leo Heier.
