Carole Ann Nelson, 82, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Avera St Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation and a time of sharing will be at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel 5-7 pm, Friday, December 9, 2022, with a wake service to follow. Mass of Christian Burial is 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aberdeen, SD, with interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Carole was born December 12, 1939, to Bernard (Ben) and Theresa (Bell) Weiss in Moorhead, MN.  The family moved to Orient, SD when Carole was 3 years old.

Carole graduated from Orient High School in 1957, then went to Northern State Teacher’s College graduating with a two-year elementary teaching certificate.  Following graduation, she taught 6th grade at Tulare School for 3 years.

Carole married James O. Nelson in December 1961 and moved to the Nelson farm near Ashton, SD.  They relocated to Lawton, OK for a couple of years while Jim was doing military training. They then returned to Ashton SD in March 1963 where their oldest daughter, Lynn Marie was born.  In 1967 they had a second daughter Vicki Sue and in 1968 a third daughter Peggy Ann was born.

Carole was a farmwife for 17 years and an active 4-H leader for 9 years.

In 1979, Carole and Jim divorced and Carole and the kids relocated to Mellette, SD. Carole was a foster parent for several years while working as a librarian and substitute teacher at the Redfield Public School.

Carole returned to college in 1981 to get her Bachelor of Science degree in Education specializing in English and Psychology. Upon graduation, Carole worked at establishing the work therapy program for juvenile girls at the Redfield State School.  After five years in Redfield, Carole went to work at Dakota House in Aberdeen teaching a variety of subjects.  In the 14 years there, Carole developed the life skills program teaching the residential students a variety of skills for independent living.

Carole relocated to Aberdeen SD in 1993 to be closer to her work and parents.

Carole retired from work at Dakota House in 2002. She spent many years providing care for her parents until their deaths.

Carole is survived by her three daughters: Lynn (Chuck) Olson of Castlewood SD, Vicki (Everett) Schnoor of Aberdeen SD, and Peggy (Matt) Bowers of Buffalo MN; three grandchildren: Ryan (Abbie) Bowers of Yorktown, VA, Erin Bowers, and Shannon Bowers both of Buffalo, MN; and her beloved cat Patrick.

Carole is preceded in death by her parents; and a son-in-law Kyle Stuchl.
