Calix "Cal" John Dix

Mass of Christian Burial for Calix "Cal" John Dix, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 24, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father J. Joseph Holzhauser and Father DeWayne Kayser, con-celebrating.

Burial, with military rites conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen, will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, at the mortuary with a Liturgical Wake Service being held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at church on Friday.

Cal passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Calix John Dix was born on June 24, 1925, to Ulrich and Blanche (Remily) Dix at Turton, SD. He grew up in the Turton area and attended the rural Mannie School. Cal attended Turton High School for three years before being drafted into the United States Army in 1944. He served in Italy until the time of his Honorable Discharge in 1946, and then returned to the family farm.

Cal was united in marriage to Florence Vogel on October 8, 1951, in Aberdeen. They lived in the Turton area, where Cal worked on a farm for a year. In 1952, they moved to Aberdeen. He was employed with Kelly Plumbing for 11 years before beginning a 26-year career with Kesslers, where he remained until his retirement in 1989. He and Florence shared 35 years of marriage and raised eight children before she passed away in 1986. Cal continued to make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death.

Cal enjoyed woodworking, fishing and playing cards. He especially loved attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting and school events.

Blessed to have shared his life are his children: Mike (Vicky) Dix of Aberdeen, Tom (Terri) Dix of Sioux Falls, SD, Rich (Jenny) Dix of Aberdeen, Kevin (Amy) Dix of Aberdeen, Jane (Max) Hammer of Mellette, SD, Patty (Craig) Simon of Aberdeen and Shirley (Darrell) Andrud of La Moure, ND; one daughter-in-law, Deb Dix of Aberdeen; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Theresa Nelson of Watertown, SD.

Cal was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; son, Don; parents, Ulrich and Blanche; brothers: Mattie, Dwayne, Daryl and Virgil; sister, La Verne (Mike) Rahm; and great-grandson, Derek Winegar.
