At a young age, his family moved to Rolla, ND, and then to various farms in North Dakota and Minnesota until 1926, when they settled on a farm north of Leola, SD. This is the area where Byron was raised and attended school.
Byron was united in marriage to Margaret Hord on January 17, 1940, at Leola. To this union five children were born: Kelly, Gayle, Paul, Correen, and Leo. Following his retirement, Byron continued to help other farmers and worked with Smalley Fencing and with the U.S. Soil Conservation Department, planting trees and shelterbelts. He became a resident of Avera Joseph Manor in Aberdeen in September of 2014 and continued to reside there until the time of his death.
Byron was a member of the Historical Society, the Sportsman Club and the Saddle Club. He loved farm life, especially his horses. Byron also enjoyed attending auction sales, hunting, fishing, and playing cards at the pool hall on Saturday nights.
