Most people will remember Berny (Boomie to her grandchildren) driving around town. Whether she was feeding the cats down at the Quonset, distributing treats to friends at the bank, or bringing her famous potato salad or fudge to a neighbor, she was delivering joy to the community. Many years ago, she was recognized in the newspaper with an article highlighting her as Neighbor of the Year, describing her selfless acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. Her family also felt her love in so many meaningful ways, including knowing that Boomie would be the first to call each of her family members with birthday wishes.

Bernadine Marie Burgod (Boomie- coined by her grandchildren) was born on May 6, 1933, to Kasper and Katherine (Fischer) Burgod. As she remembered it, she followed her dad around everywhere to do chores in the field all day and to check cows at night. She preferred to spend her time working outside with her dad rather than the traditional cooking and cleaning in the house. On November 17, 1953, she married Richard Henderson at Holy Cross Catholic Church, and together they lived in Ipswich and had six children.

Boomie had many different jobs throughout her life, including working at the ASCS office, Ipswich nursing home, and mowing the cemetery lawn. Her most important job was raising her family. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. She was never without her rosary. She was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic church in Ipswich. Her passion for woodworking provided many heirlooms for the family including a large variety of doll furniture, play barns, handcrafted bedroom sets, and baby cradles that have rocked multiple generations. She also was an excellent seamstress, most recently making baby blankets a few weeks before she passed, for great-grandchildren due this Fall. She loved to travel, including a special trip to Macedonia & Greece, many adventures to Disney World (one of her favorite places), and a trip to any beach would do as long as she could roll up her sleeves and the seashells were plentiful.

Berny’s biggest legacy and source of pride was her 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, with a couple more on the way! She was unbelievably generous with her time caring for many of them, especially Cash, and she was present for every special event and occasion. She loved nothing more than a full house of all her family, especially on Christmas Eve, with everyone dressed up, a huge feast, and wrapping paper flying through the air as she was right in the center of the action. She will be remembered as our Boomie, who poured all her love into everything she did.

Her life will be forever cherished by her children: Renay (Michael Hein) Henderson, Kevin (Tammy) Henderson, and Marne (Jim) Fetherhuff; sister: Charlotte Zorn; Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Maxwell Henderson, and son Cash; Mandy (Marty) Quiram, and their children Kylee, Cody, and Paisely; Alexi (Ray) Erickson and their children William and Kinsley; Chelsey (Jeremy) Monroe, and their children Allie and Lincoln; Sara (Craig) Swanson and their children Jack and Ellie; Kevin (Emily) Hein and their children Mila and Sasha; Alex (Madi Sundlof) Hein; Dustin (Rachel) Henderson and their children Isabella, Shawna, Ruthie, and Gunner; Kayla Paetow and children Gianna, Mason, and Brickson; Kacey (Cory) Mahlen; Jesse (Ginny) Henderson and their children Rutt and Aubrey; Rachel Henderson; Anna Henderson; Lane Henderson; Melanie (Ted) McGee; Mathew Fetherhuff; Michael Fetherhuff; and an exchange student who became like a son: Kire (Tani) Popov and their children Stefan, Michael, Sofie, and Kate.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Henderson; children, James Henderson, Melanie Henderson, and Holly Henderson Greger; parents, Kasper and Katherine; and siblings Marie Dosch and Lawrence Burgod.
