Funeral services for Alvin George Akkerman, 95, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Plymouth Congregational United Church Of Christ, 431 West Melgaard Road, Aberdeen, with Pastor Jill K. Warner officiating.
Burial will take place at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2015, at the DeSmet Cemetery in DeSmet, SD, with Pastor Terri Akkerman presiding. Graveside Military rites will be conducted by the DeSmet American Legion.
Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Ave NW, Aberdeen, SD, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Wednesday, 5-7 p.m., at the mortuary, and one hour preceding the service at the church on Thursday.
Alvin passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Sanford Aberdeen Hospital.
Alvin George Akkerman was born February 21, 1920, in George, Iowa to George and Lena (Spieker) Akkerman. As a child the family moved to Hartford, SD, where he attended school. Alvin served in the CCC program in the Custer, SD area before entering the Army/Air Corps in 1942, (serving in the Aleutian Islands) and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Alvin married Edith McKittrick in 1942 at DeSmet, SD. After his discharge they moved to DeSmet where he farmed. In 1969 he started working for Peavey Alfa-Con as a truck driver until 1974.
Alvin married Mavis Johnson Warne at DeSmet on April 7, 1973. He then became employed with Lyle Signs at DeSmet. He retired in 1983 and they moved to Custer, SD, in the Black Hills. They then moved to Leola, SD, in January of 1996, where they continued to live until moving to Aberdeen in the summer of 2006. Alvin entered ManorCare Health Services in December 2010.
Survivors include his wife; Mavis A. Akkerman of Aberdeen, SD; two sons: Gary (Terri) Akkerman of DeSmet, SD and Larry D. "Joe" (Char) Akkerman of Bath, SD; four daughters: Beverly (Steven) Miedema of Springfield, SD, Bonnie (Marshall) Dennert of Madison, SD, Becky (Richard) Wolff of Leola, SD, and Gale Anderson of Chandler, AZ; one stepson, Gary L. Warne of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Marvin (Lois) Akkerman of Mapleton, MN; two sisters: Luella Hendricks of Arroyo Grande, CA, and Violet (Wally) Johnson of Ft. Peck, MT; 19 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren, and five great great-grandchildren.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Edith; two sisters: Nina Carlson and Florence Boysen; one step-daughter, Judy M. Groce; one infant son, Gerald Akkerman; one grandson, Matthew Arens; and one great-granddaughter, Samantha Schmidt.
