Albert Schaunaman was born June 7, 1930 to Henry and Cecilia (Wullweber) Schaunaman at the family farm northwest of Aberdeen. He attended elementary school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Westport High School. As a young man, Al was employed at the Grasslake Ranch near Chelsea, SD, and also worked on the family farm with his brothers. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing baseball with his brothers on the Westport and Columbia teams and pitching horse shoes with his father and brothers. Al also owned and operated the Westport Pool Hall for a number of years.
On May 20, 1980, Al was united in marriage to Ida Stadel. The couple shared 23 years of marriage before she passed away in November of 2003.
Albert loved farming. Whether he was riding the tractor planting and harvesting fields, checking on his cattle, or riding in his noisy '73 Chevy pickup, he enjoyed every aspect of farm life, including being an early riser, which was usually at 4:30 a.m, and never being late for anything. He enjoyed reading the American News and knew all the ads by heart. Al also enjoyed watching baseball games on TV, and always looked forward to his favorite game show, "Wheel of Fortune".
Grateful to have shared in Al's life are his brothers, Harold (Pauline) Schaunaman, Don (Hazel) Schaunaman, and Lyle (Trudy) Schaunaman, all of Aberdeen; his sister, Ila (Ardel) Ronning of Billings, MT; three step-sons: Maurice (Wanda) Stadel of Thornton, CO, Paul (Jolene) Stadel of Silsbee, TX and Tim (Mary) Stadel of Aberdeen; one step-daughter, Annette Koch of Lakewood, CO; eleven step-grandchildren; his special friend, Betty F. Weigel of Aberdeen; brother-in-law, Lyle (Virginia) Morrison; sister-in-law, Irene Schaunaman; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Al is preceded in death by his wife, parents, six brothers: George, Irl, Edwin, Leon, Henry and Robert Vern; two sisters, Anita Serna and Ruth Morrison; one brother-in-law, Miguel Serna; and five sisters-in-law: Virginia "Ginny", Doris, Peggy, Roberta and Ellen Schaunaman.
