Albert A. Gefre, 90, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father Andrew Thuringer as celebrant.

Burial, with military rites, will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Al was born April 27, 1928, to John and Katherine (Daschel) Gefre in Aberdeen, SD.  He attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Aberdeen Central High School, graduating in 1946.  He entered the U.S. Army September 26, 1946, earning the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.  He received an honorable discharge on January 8, 1948.

When Al returned to Aberdeen, he started working for Gefre-Carlson Woodworking, which later became Gefre & Son Woodworking.  On September 25, 1950, Al married Rosellen M. Miller at St. Mary’s Church in Aberdeen.

He continued to work for Gefre & Son Woodworking until 1976 and then went to work for 3M Company and retired in 1991.  He was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Church.

Al enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycling, and visiting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in South Dakota, Utah, and Colorado.  In retirement, he liked visiting friends and taking excellent care of his home, yard, and garden.

Al is survived by four children:  Teresa (Charles) Myers of Frederick, CO, Catherine (DeVern) Gerber of Nibley, UT, Marie (Anselem) Rumpca of Pierre, SD, Thomas (Lynne) Gefre of Lancaster, PA; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and sister Bernice Famias, Bismarck, ND.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosellen, parents, son Timothy, two great-grandchildren, brother Edward, and sister MaryAnn Preston.
