Winifred H. “Wini” Alkire, 98, of Lemmon, SD, passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at Eastern Star Home in Redfield, SD.

Her wishes were to be cremated with no formal services being held. Private family interment will take place at a later date at Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon, SD.

Winifred Henrietta (Wini) Ploog was born June 19, 1920 to Henry D. and Mayme (Ruziska) Ploog at Fargo, ND. She moved with her family to the Thunderhawk, SD area in 1923. She attended Thunderhawk school graduating in 1937 and then attend NDSU in Fargo, ND for 1 year. Wini married Richard A. (Dick) Alkire at Foreston, MN on October 15, 1940. They farmed in Minnesota until 1942 when they returned to the Thunderhawk area. They established a ranch between Thunderhawk and Lemmon SD and raised registered Herefords. Their son Richard joined the operation in 1973. They sold the ranch to Richard and Jill in 1979. Wini continued to live there until entering Western Horizons Care Center at Hettinger, ND in August of 2009. She moved to Eastern Star Home at Redfield, SD in October of 2010 where she lived until her passing on November 30, 2018.

Wini was a wonderful Mother and Grandmother. Wini loved cooking and baking for her family. She took meticulous care of her home and yard. Wini’s favorite thing was going out to dinner and dancing at the “Steak House” in Lemmon. Wini was an avid bowler and maintained the most beautiful plants ever. Wini was a member of Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church of Lemmon.

Wini is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn (Daryl) Peterson of Brandon, SD; son Richard D. (Jill) Alkire of Redfield, SD; grandchildren: Todd Peterson, Stephanie Peterson, Holly Alkire Petersen and Amy Alkire Rothacker; and great-grandchildren Nicholas and Cooper Brown, Sebastian Peterson, Taylor and Zach Petersen, Blaine and Derrek Rothacker.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard in 1987, her parents, her sister Helen M. Anderson and brother Kenneth Ploog.
