Violet L. Heyd was born January 16, 1933, to John and Martha (Retzer) Heyd in Long Lake, SD.  This is the area where she was raised and attended school.

Violet was united in marriage to Anton Gross on September 26, 1953, at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen.  They made their home on the family farm.  Violet was a full-time farmer’s wife, actively farming and dairying cows alongside her husband.  During the winter months, she also worked at nursing homes and restaurants.  Violet enjoyed traveling with Anton to the Black Hills, attending threshing shows, and sight seeing.  The couple shared over 54 years of marriage before he passed away on March 16, 2006.

In her spare time, Violet enjoyed playing Farkle, Yahtzee, and putting together puzzles.  She also enjoyed spending time with her Poodle dogs, which she loved greatly.   Above all, Violet loved having all of her family together for farm picnics, celebrations, and family togetherness.  Christmases at the farm will always be the best in all of her children’s memories.

Violet spent her later years spreading happiness by volunteering at nursing homes and taking “Little Jack”, her tiny poodle, to visit residents.  Her mind was steel tight and she remembered her family, friends, and everyone’s special days up to her final day.  Violet had a fun, hard-working life raising eight kids.  She was a one-of-a-kind Mom who will be dearly missed by all of her family.  We Love You Mom.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children:  Glenn (Lyla) Gross of Deadwood, SD, Joe (Candy) Gross, Dell (Kathy) Gross, Toni (John Hartung) Gross, and Barb (Mike) Griess, all of Aberdeen, John Gross of CO, Tina (Dennis) Parsons of Westport, SD and Tony R. (Shelley) Gross of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Violet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anton; her parents, John and Martha; one brother, Edward Heyd; and one sister, Esther Hart.
