Richard James Krokel was born June 2, 1936, in Mobridge, SD to William G. and Emma (Bertsch) Krokel.  He was raised on the family farm near Mound City, SD.  At a young age, Richard and his family moved to Aberdeen, where he attended Aberdeen public schools.

Richard entered the National Guard and later enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country until he was honorably discharged in January of 1958.  He then returned to Aberdeen.

Richard was a member of the United Transportation Union and Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen.  In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing.  Richard was also an avid gardener.  He enjoyed sports as well, and especially enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings on television.
