Margaret (Heilman) Malsam

Margaret Malsam, 90, of Aberdeen, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019, at Angelhaus in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Avenue SE, Aberdeen, with Father Mark Lichter, Celebrant. 

Burial follows at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.  

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service and rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Margaret Heilman was born October 25, 1929, to Lawrence and Regina (Heilman) Heilman in Bowdle, SD.  She attended country school and graduated from Hoven High School.  Margaret then earned her teaching certificate from Northern State College and taught one year of country school near Hillsview, SD.

Margaret was united in marriage to Andrew Malsam on June 7, 1948, in Bowdle.  They made their home on the Malsam family farm south of Hillsview until 1984, when they moved to Aberdeen.  After their family was mostly grown, Margaret furthered her education at Northern State University and pursued a career outside her home and farm. She remained passionate, however, about her love for the home and farm on which she raised her family and continued to participate in the management of the farm.  Above all, Margaret valued her family and was a woman of strong faith.  

Grateful to have shared Margaret’s life are her children:  Ron (Mary Halsey Malsam) Malsam of Watertown, SD, Jennifer (Bill) Mount of Aberdeen, Mary (Neil) Ellwein of Williamsburg, VA, Donna (Lyle) Peters of Colorado Springs, CO, Lori (Randy) Bollinger of Pierre, SD, Jane (David) Mutschelknaus of Brandon, SD, Theresa (Tony) Hanlon of Mead, CO, Andrew (Jenny) Malsam, Jr. of Brandon, SD and Randy (Molly) Malsam of Castle Pines, CO; one son-in-law, Rick Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; 26 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother, Steve (Virginia) Heilman of Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Jeanie (Jim) Jackson of Bowdle, SD; two sisters-in-law, Bernice and Barbara; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; one daughter, Marlene Miller; her parents, Lawrence and Regina; three brothers:  Alex, Louis and Albert; and three sisters and brothers-in-law:  Rose (Martin) Malsam, Cecilia (Frank) Imberi and Marcella (John) Thomas.
