Madaline Margaret “Marty” Thorpe was born April 10, 1949, to Wayne and Margaret (Claeys) Thorpe in Britton, SD.  She attended school and graduated from Hecla High School in 1967.  Marty then attended and graduated from Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen.

On May 29, 1968 she married Richard Huettl.  They made their home in Aberdeen for a few years before moving to Westport in 1971. Marty worked as a cosmetologist in Britton and at Adam and Eve Hair Salon for several years before starting her own beauty shop at her home.  She then started working at Shopko on August 20, 1984, and remained there for 34 years. Marty also worked 20 years at the Frederick Legion.  As busy as she was, she even found time to babysit for the rowdy Riggs and Scepaniak boys.

Marty loved her family very much.  Every Sunday she would travel to Hecla to visit with her mother. She was involved with all of her kids athletics, cheering them on and supporting them at every game.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, especially teaching them how to bake.  Marty was an avid bowler throughout her entire life playing in leagues in Aberdeen, traveling to many state tournaments and even participating in nationals in Las Vegas.  She also loved being outside, whether it be gardening or deer hunting with family.  This year Marty and Rich celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Marty was a member of many organizations including Sacred Heart Church in Westport, Westport Community Card Club, and 12 years on the Brown County Fair Board.

Marty is survived by her husband, Richard; her children: Larry Huettl, Lynnette (Todd) Hertel, and Les Huettl; seven grandchildren: Jessica, Erin, Alexis, Dawson, Ella, Hudson, and Quinn; one great-grandchild, Aidyn; four brothers: Eugene (Mary) Thorpe, Richard (JoAnne) Thorpe, Raymond (Ellen) Thorpe, Rolland (Mary) Thorpe; and two sisters, Leona (Jerome) Ness and Carla (Rick) Pahl.

Preceding Marty in death are her parents, Wayne and Margaret Thorpe; her parents-in-law, Ray and Gloria Huettl; and her brother-in-law, Robert Huettl.
