Lyle Vernon Orr was born October 23, 1936, in Murdo, SD to Rex and Selma (Anderson) Orr.  Shortly afterwards the family moved to the Wessington, SD area where Tuffy attended country school.  He was active in all sports while attending Wessington High School before graduating in 1955.

Tuffy married his high school sweetheart, Betty Harrington, on June 17, 1956.  They made their home in Wessington, SD and had two children, Denise and David.  In 1965, Tuffy and his family moved to Aberdeen, where he began working as a lineman for North Western Public Service.  He continued his career with NWPS until his retirement in 1999.

Tuffy was an avid baseball and softball player for many years.  With his family, Tuffy attended tournaments every weekend across South Dakota.  Later in life, he developed a passion for deer and elk hunting and would make yearly trips to Colorado to pursue his passion.  Tuffy was very active in the Brown County Sportsman’s Club and volunteered many hours of his time for various events.  Tuffy joined his first bowling league in 1965 and remained active in leagues and tournaments until his health no longer allowed.  He received the Sportsman of the Year award in 2001 and was inducted into the ABA Hall of Fame in 2009.  When Tuffy turned 55, he began participating in the Senior Olympics at both the state and national level.  In 2010, he was inducted into the SD Senior Games Hall of Fame.  Tuffy and his family traveled in their motor home to the various national competitions.  Tuffy also enjoyed the outdoors and camping with his family.

Tuffy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; daughter, Denise (Ray) Huber; son, David Orr; grandchildren: Zach (Marlene) Orr, Kim Mills and Samantha Huber; great-grandchildren:  Isabel Mills, Zoey Orr and Kiera Mills; step great-grandchildren:  Ashley Swanson, Teresa (Tyler) Venables and Briana Houston; his siblings:  Shirley Duxbury, Madge (Al) Perez, Keith (Jan) Orr and Ilene (Stan) Burmood; and several nieces and nephews.

Tuffy was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Selma Orr; his brothers, Richard Orr and Kip Orr; and brother-in-law, Jack Duxbury.

In lieu of flower’s, Tuffy’s family would prefer a donation to the Brown County Sportsman’s Club, as this was one of Tuffy’s favorite organizations.
