Lyle George Chase, 81, of Sturgis, SD, and formerly of Onida, SD, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Avenue SE, Aberdeen, with Father Patrick Grode as celebrant.
Burial, with military rites, will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5thAvenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church on Monday.

Lyle George Chase was born June 12, 1937, to Clarence and Vera (Moulton) Chase in Onida, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. Following graduation from Onida High School in 1956, Lyle furthered his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.
Lyle was drafted into the United States Army in 1961. Following basic training, he spent one year of service in Germany. Lyle served his country until 1963, when he received his Honorable Discharge. Upon returning to the states, Lyle began what would become a 39-year career as a Range Conservationist with the Bureau of Land Management.
Lyle was united in marriage to Wanda Hereford in Casper, WY on March 9, 1968. The couple made their home in Casper, but because of Lyle’s employment transfers in his career, they also lived in Lander, WY, Worland, WY, and Dickinson, ND, before retiring in Belle Fourche, SD. Lyle and Wanda were currently residing in Sturgis, SD.
Lyle loved horses and in his younger years was a member of a Rodeo Club. He also enjoyed baking and received blue ribbons for his cinnamon rolls.
Blessed to have shared in Lyle’s life is his wife of 50 years, Wanda Chase of Sturgis, SD; daughter, Teri (Scott) McDougle of Aberdeen; stepsons: Ainor “Corky” (Edith) Griswold of Fort Washakie, WY and Douglas (Francine) Griswold of Pinon, AZ; one grandson, Chad (Gabrielle) Griswold; and one brother, Lyman (Marsha) Chase of Pierre, SD.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Vera; brother, Gary Chase; sisters, Koreen Jonas and Virginia Chase; step-son, Gregory “Moe” Griswold; and granddaughter, Kenda Hoff.
