Katherine M. Vetch passed away peacefully at the Ipswich Care and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, December 29, 2017, at the age of 92.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rd Avenue SE, Aberdeen, with Father Mark Lichter and Father Russell Homic officiating.

Burial follows at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service and rosary beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church on Thursday.

Katherine was born on June 6, 1925, in Hosmer, SD to Anton and Magdelena (Fischer) Malsam.  This is the area where she was raised and attended school.  

Katherine was united in marriage to Paul Vetch on May 17, 1948, in Hosmer.  They spent most of their married life in the Hosmer area. God blessed their union with 14 children.  In addition to being a wife and mother, Katherine also worked several years in the Hosmer Senior Center.  In 1983, Katherine and Paul moved to Aberdeen to help care for their daughter, Judy, and her family.  Katherine loved caring for many children in their in-home daycare.  No one left her home hungry, as she was an avid baker and cook.   Katherine and Paul moved to Ipswich in June of 2017.

Katherine is survived by her husband of 69 years, Paul Vetch, Ipswich; 12 children:  Janice (Ralph) Borge, Aberdeen, Joyce Mettler, Mobridge, Jeanette (Chuck) Nietert, Aberdeen, Kathleen Beck, Rapid City, James Vetch, Sioux Falls, Wilbert (Pat) Vetch, Eau Claire, WI, John (Ronda) Vetch, Mitchell, Paul (Diane) Vetch, Warner, Mary (Jason Lien) Job, Aberdeen, Richard (Heather) Vetch, Eureka, Paulette (Brad) Ulmer, Watertown, and Michelle (Alvin) Gerlach, Aberdeen; son-in-law, Don Bremer, Bullhead City, AZ; 36 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ludwig (Alice) Malsam; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Mohr and Vivian Malsam, all of Aberdeen.

Katherine was preceded in death by daughter, Judy Bremer and infant son, Thomas; two sons-in-law; Bruce Mettler and Michael Beck; her parents; six brothers and one sister.
